MP3: Rick Ross feat. Nas – “Usual Suspects.”

March 30, 2009

Officer Ross was stripped much of his crime lord gravitas after stumbling through weak denials in the face of overwhelming evidence that he once worked as a Dade County correctional officer. He followed that up with the strange strategy of antagonizing professional provocateur 50 Cent (who then gleefully waltzed around with one of Ross’ babymamas and narrated a sex tape starring another one). But Ricky is a better rapper than most people give him credit for. I tossed his last LP, Trilla, on the tail end of my top ten of 2008 list in the Voice’s Pazz and Jop poll. He doesn’t excel at providing vibrant detail like a Ghostface or Kool G Rap–a weakness that may be a reflection of Ross’ questional criminal past–but he lays down professional-grade verses, picks good beats, and makes fine albums. Everything that has been released from the upcoming album Deeper than Rap has been of similar quality.
